Prince Edward Island (PEI) is Canada's smallest and its greenest province. Known for the vivid colours of its gently rolling landscape, Prince Edward Island is nestled on the waves of the Gulf of St. Lawrence and is surrounded by miles of sandy beaches and red sandstone cliffs, and connected to the mainland by a 9-mile bridge. History Prince Edward Island came under British rule in 1763. The following year, the area was surveyed and a portion of the new British holdings was named Charlotte Town in honor of the wife of King George III of England. In 1765, Charlotte Town was designated as the provincial capital. Three years later the town was mapped out with streets crossing at right angles, creating 500 lots and four green spaces which are still well-defined today. But it wasn’t until 1770 that a formal government was established in Charlottetown with the arrival of Governor Walter Patterson. Charlottetown also served as headquarters for the military which was housed at Fort George. In 1855, Charlottetown officially became a city. Since 1995 the City of Charlottetown has also encompassed the communities of Hillsborough Park, East Royalty, West Royalty, Parkdale, Sherwood, and Winsloe. Today, the city has a population of more than 32,000, covers 42.6 square kilometers, and serves as the primary business hub for Prince Edward Island, which is attractive to new companies.
